Education – David Hodgett

As Shadow Education Minister, David is committed to improving Victoria’s Educational outcomes.  A father of seven, David is acutely aware of the many challenges facing our students and is passionate about improving student literacy standards, student attendance rates and student mental health.

David recognises the importance of foundation learning in numeracy and literacy and is steadfast in his resolve to improve these areas in both primary and high school. The current methodology of teaching reading and the overly complicated school curriculum is in desperate need of a reset and David is excited to provide his blueprint for these areas in the coming months.

Due to the prolonged lockdown of 2020 and short lockdown of 2021, Victorian students’ mental health has been severely impacted, and David is committed to improving mental health services for our school children. He is also strongly passionate about only closing schools during lockdowns as a last resort, noting the numerous studies highlighting the damage done to students during pandemic-related school lockdowns.

He is also a strong advocate for the Performing Arts in the school curriculum, understanding the importance of creative outlets for students, an area that is often forgotten, overlooked or reduced under the current Labor government.

David believes that success for students should not be measured on the quantum of funding only.  There needs to be a focus to improve support for teachers, parent engagement and student outcomes.

David supports continued investment in school buildings and facilities.
