Tourism – David Hodgett

Tourism has a vast and significant role to play in Victoria’s thriving economy.

We need to ensure it has the support and means to continue expanding to ensure Victoria remains at the forefront of international and interstate visitors’ minds when choosing their next destination.

Tourism numbers are expected to continue increasing, particularly as direct flight access to major tourism markets in Asia and Europe. Victoria’s two curfew-free international airports gives it considerable competitive advantage over Sydney for international flight arrivals. Planning for A third airport, potentially in the south-east of Melbourne to serve its growing population as well as that of Eastern Victoria, would further boost that capacity.

In light of this, Daniel Andrews has done the bare minimum to attract new international flights and ensure that Melbourne’s international flight market share continues to grow to overtake Sydney.

Visit Victoria and Regional Tourism Boards need ongoing support to ensure that all of Victoria’s diverse tourism assets are effectively marketed both locally and overseas. Long term, secure funding agreements are necessary to provide the certainty needed to plan and get on with their short, medium and long term objectives.

The Liberal Nationals recognise the value in listening to tourism operators, appreciate their knowledge and experience, and encourage their input into Government decision-making over the matters that affect their lives and livelihoods.

The Liberal Nationals will continue to fund, develop partnerships and strategies to encourage growth which will increase expenditure and visitation numbers.
